M – Mujin Wakusei Survive (Uninhabited Planet Survive)

  • Posted on April 15, 2017 at 3:31 pm

An oldie, but a goodie. Uninhabited Planet Survive is what would happen if you took Lord of the Flies, added girls, science fiction, and a whole new planet. I won’t spoil it for you, but the twist towards the end is absolutely amazing.

Why I recommend it to Writers: Because of the excellent way it portrays adolescent children, as well as the great twist towards the ending. It’ll teach you how to write a survival series very well.

Warnings: violence against children.

G – Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet (Suisei no Gargantia)

If this were a top ten list, Garantia on the Verdurous Planet would be in the top three. This beautiful tale of human nature makes me tear up every time I watch it. I can’t imagine a more poignant combination of a coming of age story and speculation over the meaning of human life.

Why I recommend it for writers: Between the deep existential themes and the amazing characterisation, this is a beautiful example of world-creation done right.

Warning: Major Character Death, and lots of Gore. Also, if you’re squeamish about tentacles or squid, this probably isn’t the anime for you.
